Feeding A Sick Toddler
Feeding A Sick Toddler
It feels like we are in the thick of cold season and most kids end up getting sick during the colder weather. When your little one is fighting a cold, food is usually the last thing on their mind. I always used to stress out about my son not eating but time has taught me that it's ok and completely normal! Children often lose their appetite when they are sick but will always make up for it after!
I aim to implement the following and find this works best to help him build up his strength.
1. HYDRATION
This is the most important! Encourage them to drink as much as possible and offer hydrating fruits and veggies such as cucumber, watermelon, courgette, celery, strawberries, pineapples and peaches.
2. Serve honey
Honey contains high antibacterial properties and antimicrobial compounds to suppress coughs and it also boosts the immune system. In the UK, the NHS (national health service) now actually recommend honey for coughs.
It is important to note that honey is not suitable for under 1’s.
3. Add healing spices to smoothies and meals/snacks
Turmeric is one of the best known spices for fighting colds and can be added to smoothies or cooking.
Ginger is superb for inflammation and I usually add a little extra when my son is unwell or recovering from a cold. It can also work well in smoothies!
Garlic is naturally immune boosting and has been used to help fight colds for centuries and again can be added to most meals.
4. Load up on Vitamin C
Traditionally oranges always come to mind, however broccoli, bell peppers and strawberries are also a superb source of vitamin C.
5. Healthy Fat
Where possible add in high calorie, good fats to maximise every mouthful.
6. Protein
Add protein where possible, this can be in the form of crushed nuts and seeds sprinkled over food or added to smoothies.
Note: no whole nuts or seeds for under 5’s.
Disclaimer: This post is not intended to replace medical advice. If you are concerned your child is unwell or dehydrated seek medical as soon as possible. ⠀⠀
